Was My First Love
The next question came from a very attractive co-ed that sat the closest to me.
The girl was blond and flirty, and I had my eye on her all day. She was from Duke University, and you could tell she had money by the way she was dressed and acted, and of course, by the Mustang she was driving. Anyway, she quickly asked the question we all wanted to ask.
âIda Mae, did you ever get to date or court anybody from up on the mountain, and what was your love life like?â
Ida Maeâs eyes had a little twinkle in them, and a sneaky little grin pressed the wrinkles around her mouth into a smooth, up-turned, crescent moon shape.
âI was not an ugly girl, so I had a few boys that wanted to catch my attention. Lordy, they acted like pure fools. I was impressed by a few of them, but they were just fleeting moments. We all, at the time, had seasonal work to do. While at church and school, I had noticed a couple of real lookers, but I just wasnât that interested during that time in my life. Guess I was just too busy with the horses and the other animals around the place. We all were hard workers up here, so there wasnât much idle time for courting until the courting bug bit me, and then I made sure I had the time. It was hard to fall for any of the boys when my brothers and cousins dared anyone to touch me. When the mountain girls court everyone watches out for them.â She laughed as she told us the rest of the story.
She plainly said, âMy love life is a simple tale. I have been in deep love twice in my whole life, and thatâs enough for any female. Now, mind you, I have been âin likeâ and infatuations before a couple of times down the road, but none of those silly things ever amounted to anything special.â
Ida Mae smiled as she was thinking back to those days. She said that in her younger days she would have never talked out loud about her love life or her private life to anyone, but now that she has grown older, she just didnât give a hoot.
She said that she had to set the situation, like a play, so we all would understand how this all came to be. She wanted to explain how and why the coal company had a lot to do with her first love story. It all started with the growth of the new coal company. She said that they brought down engineers and geologists from up north to assist in the planning and running of the mining part of the business. The mapping of the tunnels and taking of ore samples were all new ways of doing things at that time. It became scientific, and they needed men that had been specially educated for that purpose.
